Before answering the message, bring up Task Manager (or Process Explorer if
you have that installed). Note everything that's running. Close the
message box. Check if anything disappeared from Task Manager/Process
Explorer. If the list did change, then you've a starting point.

Assuming it's a legitimate network error, try disabling then re-enabling the
NIC. Or see if the error comes up when you boot the PC with the Ethernet
cable not plugged in.

Run a registry cleaner like http://www.ccleaner.com/ or a PC checkup like
http://www.pcpitstop.com/betapit/. Run through MS's checklist at
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/281770.

And then there's the old favorites: Re--install or upgrade to a more current
version of Windows. XP has the optional Desktop Search and Vista has search
integrated; either would speed up content searches of your extra drives. 2K
was great but before long you're going to start running into issues if you
have to replace any hardware.

curious if anyone ever learned a neat trick about tracking...
