Why don't you ask on the XAMPP forums? That's the best place to ask. Assuming that you took the defaults when installing XAMPP it should produce a page as you note. I'm assuming that you know that Apache is working by testing with a "bad" page request.

I moved to MAMP some 18 months ago so I don't have working XAMPP to compare to - but when I did have problems the XAMPP support forums sorted me out - sometimes - just sometimes - Midrange.com is not the best source.
