You're mostly out of luck to get a good connection here. Check if
there is a docking station for your laptop that has a DVI output.
Almost all ThinkPad series have this.

This is a Dell Latitude D830. Actually, I didn't think about a solution
from Dell. I was in a more generic mindset. It does look like Dell makes
a docking station but it's more expensive than I was planning. Also, a
docking station isn't as portable as just cables. Since you mentioned it
I did find this at Dell. It costs a little more but I have more
confidence that it would work.

Remember:
* HDMI is essentially DVI with a different pinout. Plus Audio. Plus
control channels. The video signal is the same, which is why physical
converters exist and are very cheap.

I hadn't thought about audio in the HDMI cable. I'm used to separate
audio/video cables. If I did try to cable it together, if it did work
there probably wouldn't be any sound.
