FWIW: Most digital cameras, regardless of brand, tend to operate this way.

Although you can take very good pictures with a P&S digicam ... a 'serious' photographer would probably be using a digital SLR (DSLR) and not a P&S.

I don't consider myself a professional by any stretch (I fall in the 'pro-sumer' category) ... but I like how both my powershot and my EOS 40D operate.
