First, on http://www.ultimatebootcd.com/ give the Offline Registry Editor a
try (look under NTFS Tools).

As to a home network, for $450 drop this in a corner somewhere:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16859321014. It's
Atom-based so it won't consume much power, has adequate RAM, Home Server
pre-installed, and a 2TB HD with room for 3 more HDs. When you start using
it for more than backup; i.e. as a shared file location for docs, photos,
and/or videos add a second drive to it. Preferably another 2TB but it
doesn't have to be. 1.5TB drives are on sale for $70-80 right now.

If you need to network the house, I've found WiFi to be fine on laptops but
for some reason I've never been too happy with it on desktops. I'd go
Powerline (
http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList.aspx?Submit=ENE&N=2050130294%201155831041&name=Up%20to%20200Mbps)
for plug-n-play simplicity.

I feel your pain. Getting rid of the clutter may be a good thing so maybe
I should look on the bright side. What is frustrating is that I found an
answer to the issue on the web, I just can't get at the registry to
implement it.

I don't have a home network but I'm getting closer to setting one up all
the time. Storing the installation media somewhere else is just one more
reason.

Understood. Been there, done that many times. Anymore if I have to
rebuild and can't restore I install Windows, the printer & video drivers,
Office, Acrobat Reader, Firefox, maybe AnyDVD, whatever that machine used
for burning CD/DVDs, AV, and the Home Server widget. Just about everything
else I want until there's a need before I take the time. It can be a little
aggravating when my wife wants some random app a few months later but it's
one way to keep down the app clutter.

I've also taken to keeping the installers for downloaded apps on the Home
Server. I create a directory for each PC & dump the installers there. Then
I create a text file and populate it with license keys and any other info
needed. The installers will usually become out of date quickly but the
license file keeps me from hunting through email archives or printed
receipts to find the elusive product keys.

John,

What you say is true. However, I had used this drive before so I
didn't worry about it too much. That was some time back and my
suspicion is that the bad sectors on the boot drive didn't copy on my
last image (user option in Ghost). That might explain the missing
information.

I do have the user data on another drive as well as the original data
drive for the PC so that should be covered. I really don't want to
restore all the apps though.
