Back in the day I might have maintained a site by hand but I agree that
nowadays using WordPress or another CMS is preferable. Especially if time
is precious your day job isn't web dev.

That said, if I were doing a site for my high school, I'd probably not do a
domain at all & just publish a page on Facebook, Google+, or an "alum" page
on LinkedIn. Let someone else manage the infrastructure and member contact
info is updated by the members themselves. It can be a closed group
meaning you have to approve those who want to join but otherwise it's
hands-off admin. You also gain discussion capabilities, a group calendar
(on site sites .. LinkedIn retired theirs), photo sharing, and other
features.

I manage the social media presence for the non-profit Chicago ISSA
chapter. Our chapter site runs on WordPress but we have pages on the above
mentioned social media sites as well as a Twitter account. That's all
free. For a small fee we also use MailChimp for mass emailing
announcements & EventBrite to handle meeting registrations.

A friend and I have a pretty simple web site; one which we designed and
maintain for our high school class. Pretty much pure HTML with a few Java
Scripts.

Right now, whenever someone's address or such changes, they forward it to
me, and I use a text editor to change it. Mike (my partner), who honestly
is the primary designer, wants to migrate it to something called Wordpress,
which I've googled. His reasoning is that it will be easily to make such
changes; i.e., he or I could just make them direct on the server, no FTP
needed.

Well, I'm not sure that's a compelling reason, but I'll let that slide.

My question is: What do you use to maintain a web site, and what do you
think about it? I guess I'm really asking about IDEs, such as Dream Weaver
and Wordpress, but I'm sure there are others in the wild.

Like I said, it's a real simple site; no order processing involved! .-)
