Thanks for the follow-up. According to MS, Disk Cleanup "removes temporary
files, empties the Recycle Bin, and removes a variety of system files and
other items that you no longer need." so it probably removed entries tied
to the the old motherboard/NIC and that in turn allowed the drivers to
properly work with the E6500's chipset.
