Thanks for all your responses.

We have 7 Dell E6400/6500 in the field and never had an issue connecting to
Verizon Mobile Hotspot until now. The Dells do support a fairly broad
range of protocols so I think it should work. But this is the first S7.

Yes, these laptops are old. Our old sales ordering software in the field
required windows. The new software runs in a browser so the hardware
selection can be laptop, tablet, or smartphone. We just started using it a
couple of weeks ago and are still transitioning. We want the salespeople
to use it a bit longer and let them decide individually what new kind of
device they want.

So, I would say that it should work with just about anything. If, however
you can't get it to work is tethering acceptable? I've tethered my laptop
to the phone via a USB cable and an app called PdaNet by June Fabrics (yes,
that's the name). It's worked fine. It now offers it's own hotspot option.

There a few different WiFi substandards. Its usually 802.11ᴚ, where ᴚ is a
rightsize up latin letter such as 802.11n. I have a super low end laptop
that I can't connect to the new fast wifi networrk at an old client, but
works fine on their slower network.

But yes it passes the smell test, and I would guess its a matter of
"flavors" of 802.11 supported. He could probably get a super small USB wifi
adapter if this proves to be the issue. Also, he MIGHT be ableto get a
faster wifi card for his laptop. They are removable, but I don't know how
standard they are and if an ancient laptop uses the same form factor as the
modern ones.
