Ok, I use List API's. In the generic header section it says how many list
entries there are, GHListNbr. What I want to do is:

/free

       // Retrieve the generic list header.
       clear errc0100;
       errc0100p=errc0100;
       qusptrus(UserSpace:pGH0100:errc0100p);
       errc0100=errc0100p;
       if exceptionId<>*blanks;
        return;
       endif;

       // Initialize our offset to the offset of the list data.
       pJobl0100=pGH0100 + GHListOff;
       For 1 to GHListNbr;
        cmd='SNDBRKMSG MSG(' + Apostrophe + %Trim(BrkMsg) + Apostrophe +
            ') TOMSGQ(' + %trim(JLJobNam) + ')';
        qcmdexc(cmd:%len(%trim(cmd)));
        pJobL0100=pJobL0100 + GHListMbrSz;
       EndFor;

       Return;

      /end-free

But I can't.  Instead I have to
/free

       // Retrieve the generic list header.
       clear errc0100;
       errc0100p=errc0100;
       qusptrus(UserSpace:pGH0100:errc0100p);
       errc0100=errc0100p;
       if exceptionId<>*blanks;
        return;
       endif;

       // Initialize our offset to the offset of the list data.
       pJobl0100=pGH0100 + GHListOff;
       For x = 1 to GHListNbr;
        cmd='SNDBRKMSG MSG(' + Apostrophe + %Trim(BrkMsg) + Apostrophe +
            ') TOMSGQ(' + %trim(JLJobNam) + ')';
        qcmdexc(cmd:%len(%trim(cmd)));
        pJobL0100=pJobL0100 + GHListMbrSz;
       EndFor;

       Return;

      /end-free

And I have no use whatsoever for X. And X must be previously defined.

What are you trying to do?
