The time it takes to learn a new language and be productive in the business world depends on the person, and the time that person has to learn the language. For me personally, if I have a full time job, and am trying to learn a language on top of that, then yes, probably 2-3 years is needed. However, if I were to start a NEW job, and was asked to learn a new language, with my current years of experience in the IT industry and business environment, I feel very confident I could learn any language and be very productive inside a year. Does that mean knowing everything about the language? Of course not. I have been programming for 18+ years, and still don't know everything about RPG! Tracy L. Ball Total Response, Inc. Learning a language well enough to use its benefits is not a matter of a few hours time on a couple of weekends. It takes at least 3 years of intensive and hard work with plenty of experience. Of course anyone can crank out their first "Hello World" program sooner but to be a worthwhile programmer in the business environment in less then 3 years does not happen anywhere but in the mind of the self-important. Your comment about lack of ambition is just to insulting to respond to. --------------------------------------------------------- Booth Martin http://www.MartinVT.com Booth@MartinVT.com --------------------------------------------------------- -------Original Message------- From: rpg400-l@midrange.com Date: Thursday, January 02, 2003 11:14:41 AM To: 'rpg400-l@midrange.com' Subject: Visual RPG vs. Other Visual languages was ->RE: Is RPG available on any other platform ? ..I can see your point of going to VARPG if your shop is entirely RPG programmers with little ambition to learn a different language.... <snip> _______________________________________________ This is the RPG programming on the AS400 / iSeries (RPG400-L) mailing list To post a message email: RPG400-L@midrange.com To subscribe, unsubscribe, or change list options, visit: http://lists.midrange.com/cgi-bin/listinfo/rpg400-l or email: RPG400-L-request@midrange.com Before posting, please take a moment to review the archives at http://archive.midrange.com/rpg400-l.
