I need to write a process that requires converting a 10 chars field in a
file to a numeric field.  There are millions of records in this file and
speed is very import for this process.  Does any one know of the most
speedy way to do this conversion?  Note:  This char field is left
justified (contains tailing blanks) and could contain all blanks.
