Just for the record:  The readline() procedure was intended for 
EDUCATIONAL PURPOSES ONLY.  It was intended to be a simple example that 
you could learn about IFS programming from.   It's up to you to write 
your own routines that work according to your specifications.

Please don't take readline() and use it unless you are willing to 
understand how it works and modify it as needed for your purposes. It's 
not intended to be load-n-go code.

You might want to consider using fgets() which is a system-supplied API 
that does almost the same thing as readline(), but it's faster and 
doesn't have any of the problems you describe.
