You don't need save and repopulate the SFLMOD field. All you need to  
do is use the value of SFLMOD to condition either SFLDROP or SFLFOLD  
as appropriate. For example:

DDS
 A                                      SFLMODE(&SFLMOD)
 A  90                                  SFLDROP(CF11)

RPG III (Old code but it's all I had and I can't be bothered  
converting it).

I              '1'                   C         $TRUNC
I              '0'                   C         $FOLD

In the *INZSR or equivalent:
  * Initialise the subfile mode indicator
 C                     MOVE $TRUNC    SFLMOD

At the end of the build-subfile loop:
  * If the subfile is currently in folded mode then ensure
  *   it stays that way
 C                     MOVE SFLMOD    *IN90


That's it. Subfile will be displayed in initial mode. SFLMOD will be  
set as user toggles between modes. After page-up/down subfile will be  
displayed in the last mode requested by the user. Easy.
