Current version of the program uses externally-described mode, and
has to be recompiled every time the database layout changes; trying
to eventually release a version that doesn't care.

Consider using dynamic SQL. Or call the ILE C _Ropen(), _Rreadk() type APIs instead of using RPG's file I/O.

RPG's file support is powerful and easy to use, but it's not usually the best tool when the file layout can vary.
