I suspect this is a side-effect of a change to the compiler at 510.

Prior to 510 specifying empty parentheses on a procedure call with no  
parameters would result in a syntax error. Somewhat silly and  
corrected in 510. Since BIFs are effectively compiler-supplied  
procedures it seems reasonable that empty parentheses are allowed on  
them too--whether this was by design or side-effect only Barbara can  
say.
