Thanks all. From the prior comments I think that I will adopt using
%Error() and %Status() to remain consistent with other bifs. I didn't
mention the I/O bifs as, out of habit, I always specify a filename.

By design. If I recall correctly, there was a very brief discussion
about whether or not to also allow empty parentheses for BIFs, but no
argument because everyone here thought it should be allowed.
