In C, you can use += as well. It means essentially the same thing as
it does in RPG. Actually, you could reasonably argue that RPG got it
from C.

The big difference in C is that most statements, including assignment,
are also expressions; whereas in RPG, there is a sharper distinction
between statements and expressions, and assignment can only be part of
a statement, not an expression.
