I won't miss SDA or RLU at all.
I never used RLU after my first look at it, and SDA never gave me any dopamine.
For the 'preview' functionality, I've been stubbing out my RPG code; I
mean, I'm going to write a loop, EXFMT, check for exit anyway, it's
not like I'm losing anything by having an editor in one window and a
green screen in the other. Edit/compile the DDS, edit/compile the RPG,
test the RPG.
That being said, if someone feels that they NEED SDA, then that seems
to be...that.
Like Jeff, we are losing our IBM server. There's a plan being formed
to go to Salesforce and Amazon Web Services. The details are sketchy,
but the clear order from the C Suite is to get rid of that green
screen IBM machine. For a variety of reasons mostly beyond the control
of the developers, we've been locked to the 5250 interface long enough
that the entire platform is now tainted by association. No amount of
rational discourse matters - it's a political decision at this point.
A decision made, and it's final. Terminal, if I can deploy an ironic
pun.
If I could leave readers with anything at all, it's this: Get off of
green screen now. Do everything in your power to get a budget, to
write web pages, to demonstrate that the platform is solid, and your
skills are, too.
