First thing to come to mind is the possibility of change. A .zip 
file might be packaged up today and it could be downloaded by 
someone next week. Tomorrow, some class that was part of the .zip 
might be updated.

I download the .zip next week and start to apply it. The updater 
compares the unzipped files against some remote repository and notes 
that some changes have been made. In order to include the very 
latest, it pulls it from that repository. Sort of like what IBM 
started to do with groups and cumes.

I could choose to stick with the .zip or to get every last little 
available detail, assuming I have the choice to check various 
repositories or not.

Just a WAG... maybe totally irrelevant.
