Then with respect you must have some inefficient coding techniques in  
place to build the HTML.  My best guess would be that you are  
building strings into a conventional character variable when you  
should be using Varying.  That alone can result in a 10,000 to 1  
performance boost where large strings are involved.
I use CGIDEV2's template system - I don't like reinventing the  
wheel.  CoralTree Systems Renaissance (http:// 
www.renaissanceframework.com/) builds an entire full blown framework  
on top of this and still manages sub-second response time.  Check it  
out.
By all means check out any and all other options for your web apps -  
I use both Java and PHP (and soon EGL Joe!) as well as RPG CGI and I  
repeat that I have never seen performance problems of the type you  
describe.  Check out the demos at Renaissance or at the Easy400 web  
site (
http://www.easy400.net) - I'd be very surprised if you can make  
any of them run as slowly as you seem to experience.
