I suspect it has more to do with what plugins you have loaded for 96 and 98.

I run vanilla (no 3rd party plugins), and regularly switch between 96 and 98 workspaces. I do get the warning switching back and forth.

So you can USE a 96 workspace, just make sure you are using the same version (ie RPG Tools, not EE version) and that you have the same plugins loaded as the 96 version.

The workspace saves all of the data for the 3rd party plugins. We run into this often with our Beta team...

One BIG issue with RDi 9.8/Eclipse, (for me). Unlike previous versions you cannot simply (copy and) use an existing 9.6 workspace. A consequence of doing this is the tabs on any Views are missing the close icon (X).
