After quite a while I managed to get Tomcat working quite successfully
with
Webfacing.  The main points that seemed to get me there were to upgrade to
V5R1
PTF cumm package C2134510 (I believe that's still the most recent) and to
change
the wfapp.properties file in the directory
/www/yourhttpsvr/webapps/yourapp
/WEB-INF/classes/conf/ to have the {WFWTE} = true  parameter set.

So the major setups would be:
1/ Setup your Tomcat server (I used a worker.inprocess.type=jni as seen in
the
/www/yourhttpsvr/conf/workers.properties file)
2/ In webfacing export your application to a WAR file and copy it into the
/www/yourhttpsvr/webapps/ directory
3/ Start your HTTP server and the WAR file will expand and create all the
directories and files needed.
4/ Modify your wfapp.properties file (as specified above)
5/ In the /www/yourhttpsvr/conf/httpd.conf file add two JKMount lines for
your
application like this JkMount /yourapp/* inprocess  JkMount /yourapp
inprocess
6/ Restart your http server and you should be happening.

Note: This is based on an Apache (based) HTTP server and not the original
IBM
HTTP server config. Also, step 5 above could be done using IBM's "Tomcat
wizard"
but it was actually quicker for me to just edit the file directly (which
can be
done from the command line using the WRKLNK command).

I managed to get Tomcat running on our iSeries.  Thanks to the suggestion
by David Morris for the two links:

The sample calculator and the sample snoop worked great.

We have one person chomping at the bit to do some jsp's.
Another person wanting to try WebFacing over Tomcat.
Although IBM pushes WAS, I believe that others have it working over
Tomcat.
