Joe, 

BA with Apache is actually quite simple.  It would look
something like this:

Alias /secure  /myweb/wwwsecure                          
<Directory /myweb/wwwsecure>           
...
   AuthName "Secure"                  
   AuthType Basic                       
   PasswdFile %%SYSTEM%%                
   UserID %%CLIENT%%                    
   Require valid-user                   
</Directory>     

You could also use a Location container to do the same
thing, like this:
<Location /secure>           
   AuthName "Secure"                  
   AuthType Basic                       
   PasswdFile %%SYSTEM%%                
   UserID %%CLIENT%%                    
   Require valid-user                   
</Location>
                                                  

These examples of course are for system userids and
password.  But it should be fairly simple to update them.
 Unless I misunderstand your problem.
