Colin and Joe,

In theory, I can't refute your arguements - in practice though, in my
current situation, I have to deliver the goods with the tools available.
take a moment to read a post I wrote a few weeks ago (for which got no
response, probably out of sympathy) to get an idea of why.

http://archive.midrange.com/midrange-l/200403/msg01431.html

I'm fighting entrenched buracracy, fiefdoms, and old school ideas of what a
developer should be able to do. I asked the powers that be for a second
instance of apache for testing 4 weeks ago, and it's still not happened.
What if I asked for websphere to be configured and running? It would take
months just to get someone to crack a manual - and I don't have the time to
wait, or the authority to do it myself.

Joe, I don't like my situation, and I'm constantly looking on
monster/dice/carreerbuilder, etc. there's nothing out there at anywhere
near my salary. I can't just quit my job, I have responsibilities. I can't
move to another state, I can't quit, and I can't afford a pay cut.

So, instead of ripping me for my "career choices", please just answer my
question.

Thanks,

Rick

I second that, Colin.

Heck, just the ability to debug the thing on your desktop is a plus.
The fact that servlets are just classes, the ability to apply filters,
the incredible range of pre-written Java tools for everything from
encoding to persistence, the portability of the web portion of the
application - all of these simply make RPG-CGI a second-tier choice, and
only valid if you insist on not learning Java. And in today's world,
not learning Java is a pretty poor career choice.

Joe
