No choice, if you want cross-browser support and only have name tags.
Joe's solution of assigning IDs at runtime is interesting though.
However, in versions of IE earlier than 5.0 the ID was read-only.

Because, shocking as it may seem <G>, IE isn't following the standards
-- or more accurately, IE is going beyond the standard. The standard for
getElementById says it will look for elements with the ID supplied.
However, ID looks for elements with either the ID or NAME supplied.
Since you have NAME not ID you need to use getElementsByName to work in
both browsers.

Yes.  You are correct. 

So in your earlier post, you are suggesting changing getElementById to 
getElementByName ??

I don't begin to understand why that which works in IE doesn't work in 
NS as both the above seem to be supported by both browsers, but, if, 
with help I can fix it, that 's what matters!
