Defer should work in both IE and NS. I think that the problem you are seeing is because you haven't specified it correctly. In the code you included earlier your script element looked like this: <script language="JavaScript" defer="defer">. This will not work, defer should only contain "true" or "false", so if you change your script element to this: <script language="JavaScript" defer="true">, it should work.
