There is a difference in where they run. CGI apps run in Apache, jsps/java run in an app server. Apache just passes the request on to the app server and waits for the app server to pass HTML back to send to the user. If the CGI APIs talk to Apache to get environment data I could understand why the app server would not respond to those APIs

Scott: I'm not sure that's the case ... from what I've seen, jsp's and servelet's are basically CGI applications ... just with a richer feature set. They still use the same basic functions as CGI programs. I'm pretty sure that the standard environment variables are available ... but there are better ways to access them using the language features. I could be wrong though. david
