Thanks for the suggestion of changing the msg to dump the job.
I understand pretty well what causes mch3402 but was asking
how to get a clearer picture of what is happening.
This is a "generated" program, so I can see the source, could even
debug it, but actually cannot recreate the error. In hundreds of
executions it fails only a couple times. It's a very simple screen
with 20 or so text entry fields and the form action is to
call itself, passing all the entry fields in the url string. It's not calling the program by a pointer.
This is not the only pgm doing this, but the pattern is the same.
Users are unaware of the problem (not getting a 404 or similar), but the
Apache instance definitely ending.

Cut the copy too soon.

Everything in joblog normal till then.
This error occurred when several users calling same group of
programs, before and after error.

Is "something" deleted by one user that the code expects will still
be available for another user? I mean a timing issue where one user
creates something, another user connects and uses it and deletes it
(because they process faster), then the failure occurs when the first
user references the destroyed object?

You'll need to examine your code to determine if this is a possibility.

Using native file logging wwwaccess and wwwerror. No indication of
"why".
What can I do in logging to get more detail? Job log already at max
level.

You can change the MCH3402 message description to dump the job
information which will give you the call stack and other stuff.
CHGMSGD MCH3402 DMPLST(*JOB). Might be helpful.

Simon Coulter.
