Take a look at the rich client stuff. It's cross-browser (even runs in a iPhone). They encapsulate things like Google APIs inside of EGL syntax. You can extend the language for things they haven't done yet.

To do advanced UI stuff I think you need to touch the UI.
Yes, that's true. But EGL has lots of it done already, and you can include your own JavaScript or Java.
