Aren't "wizards" an example of that thought process? A clear start, Next and Back buttons, and a Finish button? Such as an installation or configuration wizard. And as you point out, order entry is pretty much the same too, page-to-page, with dire warnings about going Back after submitting the order. I guess it depends on the web app.

I guess my point is that as we go more towards mashups, the idea of a traditional page-to-page flow begins to go away. At the same time, it's hard to envision anything other than page-to-page for certain transaction types, such as the entering of credit card information, reviewing of the order and final confirmation of the purchase.
