The ease-of-use statements have until now had nothing to do with JSF validation. Frankly I could do the entire development cycle without using JSF validation. Yes, it will be nice if some of those features can be used, but as I've said all along, the real validation has to be done on the host, anyway.
As it turns out, it was quite easy. And in fact, my code is getting cleaner. I did this:

completed string;
function onPrerender()
imageUrl = "http://www.radile.com/rdweb/temp/"; :: myPet :: ".jpg";
end
function onSubmit()
completed = "You successfully ordered " :: bid.quantity :: " " ::
myPet :: "(s)" :: ".";
end
function onCancel()
completed = "You cancelled this order.";
end

Then I added a Cancel button with immediate=true and then bound onSubmit to the Submit button and onCancel to the Cancel button (that was done with drag and drop on the WYSIWYG design screen). Done.

The one downside is that I had to manually code the immediate=true flag; it didn't show up on the property sheet for the h:command tag. I'll submit that to the EGL team.
