Me, I think I'd use automated editing for simple maintenance programs and
then use something closer to your design for complex applications.

Fair enough.

On to the next point of comparison I would like to contrast.

JSF has some nice features for event notification (and redirection) where
you can simply tie a button to a Java method and when clicked it goes right
to that method. From there the Java programmer has access to globally
defined variables (where I store my state sometimes) and can determine where
to go next based on the string value returned from the method (i.e. return
"success" will check the faces config file for a mapping of the literal
"success" to an actual page name like page123.jsp)

The equivalent in RPG could be created by dynamically invoking a sub
procedure (which I have implemented for web services but not for HTML form
events), but the current way I do it is to check to see if the form was
submitted (vs. the first time being displayed) and then process the form
accordingly. After that I will sometimes issue a 301 redirect to the next
page based on success or failure.

Nathan, how do you do it from your end?

Joe, how does EGL handle this?
