I would be surprised if a JRE (Java Runtime Environment) is not installed with i5/OS. If IBM does anything at all with Java it would be installed. But you'll have to check. I'm not an admin/systems type and don't know/have the need/have the time to know much about it.

I'm obviously pretty new to the forum, I don't know your history, G. Do you use WDSc? Not a requirement, but if there is a problem with the Java code allegedly we can debug with it. I jest. Of course we can, but I haven't done it yet, but will be imminently for something else. Also, there was the prototype thing which if you're going to do then no one needs to post a prototype to see if it matches Eclipse. :)

With Java installed, which should be no big deal if the JRE or JDK is not already there, a call from RPG starts up Java in your job automatically so there is no commotion involved or admin headaches.

I will go do a search on a Java class to use, I'll try to find something simpler than the usual excessive hoopla. Hopefully just vanilla code that doesn't need modification since it's pretty straightforward.

The Java .jar file will go into a directory of your choice on your IFS. Do you have WDSc RSE with the IFS directory listed? Deploying via WDSc to the IFS is very straightforward if you are using it.

CAPTCHA's are small graphic files so should be able to be dealt with through RPG calls to the image methods to return a byte stream you can write to IFS, just because you can and it takes some of the magic out of it. But if not the Java would have to be modified with a Toolbox call to write an IFS file. This off the top of my head, I wouldn't think we would need to do that.

Off to go search on CAPTCHA classes.

oh yes, would be good,
not problem using java in this way, the one I can't is install, configure
and run WAS or Tomcat or Geronimo or so on for this intend..

some brave java developer here with some of this? there is any code or
library/class available?

(also I can improve my legacy of person-hating-java, btw, magnifico)

Excellent explanation. I have to get back to work and can only gloss
over something here, but we (including your boss) really need to see
Java as part of ILE. We can call Java procedures from RPG with
prototyped calls just like any API or C or sobprocedure call, albeit
with a couple of different keywords.

We need to get you a prototype of RPG calling one of the standard
Java classes that returns the CAPTCHA image to be displayed to the RPG
program as a parm.

When he sees that it's basically the same as calling an API or C
procedure, and realizes Java is supported as part of ILE, then he will
realize it is part of the i.

The code is not complicated. If no else gets it posted quicker, I'll
take a look and get something posted. Can someone recommend a good Java
class for this?

thanks,
