This (<pre> and/or fixed fonts) creates html forms very ugly,
there is better creates the fields in the same row but do the vertical
positioning only relatives, and uses a variable font as verdana or arial.
later, if the screen/form is not too dense it can be improved (manually)
inserting table/tr/td attributes, this can be achieved easily using
dreamweaver or the last version of ms frontpage.

Yea, that sounds like a call for absolute positioning or a font where each
character has a fixed width like what you get with <pre> tags.
