The book "Professional Apache 2.0" is really good for getting you up to speed on
Apache configuration. I think the book is out of print now (and since Wrox went
belly up, probably no newer editions) but you should be able to find it used. It
is worth ever penny. I don't think there is anything in it that you can't find
on the Internet but it is handy to have it all in one place.

Actually I'm with you on this - one of our products uses the web server, and
creating a new instance is what I find harder to do by hand - until I put in a
builder on the product menu - heh!!
And I've not had time to look at too much of the Apache stuff - just skimming
the surface here and treading water on lilypads.

Once you get an understanding of what you are trying to do, it is much, muchenable
faster to manage by hand than through the GUI. The GUI also stinks badly when
dealing with sites that use virtually hosts. My primary gripe there is that it
gives no clue to where you are at in the configuration. I have some fairly
complex configurations and the only time I use the GUI is when I want to
a new feature on the server I'm working on or creating a new instance.Behalf

My biggest gripe with the admin instance is that it is interminably slow. But
I'd much rather use it than try to build an Apache instance by hand.
