Many Thanks Guillermo. I have done this. But I cannot access my network
files on either a V5R3 or a V5R1 machine using Vista. I would appreciate
any help. I reposted this problme on midrange-l at David's request and it
might be better to post any responses there.

anyway, the HOSTS file is and locate in the same way of win xp.

you must find a file named HOSTS without extension (yes, thanx the joke to
MS) in the windows etc directory.
(hosts file is usually C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc\hosts)
(but your win directory would be other)
you will be sure you save the file WITHOUT EXTENSION, please be carefull if
you use notepad.exe.

then you can put here your lines as
127.0.0.1 localhost
192.168.1.4 myAs400

I have seen problems in the archives on this but I haven't been able
to
get
started because I can't find the "hosts" file and don't know what the
equivalent function is in Vista to translate URL to IP.

This would be best posted to MIDRANGE-L (
http://lists.midrange.com/listinfo/midrange-l) as it doesn't have
anything
to do with WEB programming.
