IMO, if all you're talking about is alternate row styling (zebra striping) then you shouldn't deal with it on the server at all, you're better off doing that entirely on the client. As I read the OP's post, it was more a question of selecting a background based on some business condition. As for the lesson side of the world, yes, it's a lesson in semantic markup, but given that some of the posts included suggestions of using the TR's bgcolor tag, I think a lesson is in order. :-)
