If you're a PHP junkie, the best reason is you can develop the entire
application (database + logic + UI) on your laptop or desktop.

MySQL, like PHP, is freely available.

But we are talking generalities, not specific to System i.

For System i, the primary reason is a prepackaged application probably
mandates or assumes the database is MySQL. If you develop your own apps,
you can of course choose your database.
