I've googled it and combed through the
manuals, but I find no mention of how to end a user session.

You don't have a "session", you have a remembered basic authentication
token. There's probably a hidden spot in Firefox to "forget"
authentication tokens, but for all practical purposes there's no way to
tell the browser to forget it's authentication other than closing it.
