Since Nathan invoked my name I feel I must respond.
Hello World.
But seriously folks, one of the guys here at Zend raised a good point.
While I have been busy pursuing an aggressive schedule of webcasts I
have neglected the finer points of technical writing in the devzone to
highlight things that Kelly offered. Thank you Kelly! This is one of
the things I just love about PHP and the computer formerly called the
System/38 ;-) COMMUNITY!!!
Jim pointed out a couple of links in his note but I wanted to make sure
that you were aware that not only is the recorded webcast available for
"Getting Started with PHP on IBM i" and "PHP 101 on IBM i" but also the
PDF of the slides. ALL AT NO CHARGE! Also, I am happy to share code
with anyone who asks. For that you can buy me a beer. (Just kidding,
David!)
Furthermore, there will be a webcast at the end of September where I
will start a series of "Step-by-Step" presentations starting with the
conversion of a batch based RPG report to a PHP web page. We definitely
hear the cry for more support materials so please keep your cards and
letters coming and don't be bashful...given this audience, I know you
won't!

Getting the prerequisites loaded was a pain, but the install did not go
terribly. It was more an issue of the manual saying that such and such
should happen, and did not say what to do if it did not happen. More
important, it was not at all clear how to actually start using it once
it
was loaded. The posting that Kelly did was enormously helpful.
You're right, Net.Data seems to be a lot more straight forward.
Although
it might have something to do with the fact that I've been coding in it
for about five years, and have done a grand total of one PHP project
(which was not hosted on our trusty used-to-be 400)

Re: [WEB400] Getting frustrated with Zend
Larry,
I suspect that Mike Pavlak may jump on this. We had him tied up in a
WebEx presentation to our user's group in Utah today, where he walked
through getting a "Hello World" script to run.
He stressed the importance of being up on PTF's, prerequisites, and
following the documented installation process - which is where most
problems occur.
It sounds like the install didn't go well, for you.
Net.Data has fewer prerequisites, and steps.
-Nathan.

Jim - I don't mean to sound like a complainer, but I am having the same
sort of frustration that I had when I looked at this product a year ago.
Although there is no shortage of online documentation, I can't seem to
find something that walks me through setting up the servers, putting
pages
out there, and actually creating a small site. I have spent over 10
hours
going in circles, and still can't even determine whether I have
installed
the product properly. Also, when I click on the link to open a ticket,
I
get a drop down list of products that doesn't even include Zend Core.
It
also says that my support type is "Zend Evaluation." Aren't I supposed
to
have something called Silver support?
I am really trying to move from net.data, but this - at least so far -
has
been nightmare.
