Larry:

Are you trying to use that user and profile for database access? If you are using the framework you can always use the application.ini file to store the profile/password so you would not need to prompt for it. IE:

[database]
db.adapter = "Db2"
db.params.username = "MYUSER"
db.params.password = "MYPASSWORD"
db.params.dbname = "RDBNAME"
db.params.host = "HOST.ACCESS.ADDRESS"
db.params.driver_options.i5_lib = "LIBRARY"
db.params.os="i5"

You can override the library and database names in your code if needed; IE: protected $_name = 'BUGS'; sets the database name as "BUGS".

You can just use the framework to set up your database access and use procedural PHP for most of the application if you want. The Framework would provide the ability to mimic record level access as well so if you don't know SQL, you would not have to use it in your PHP!

Using Zend Server, I would like to present a sign-on screen where the user
enters a user ID and password to be used as the parms of the i5_connect
function. This is not hard, but I want to present that screen only once,
and use that info as the user moves from screen to screen, all of which
will require a 15_connection. I know that I can store the user and
password entered as $_SESSION variables, but I don;t like the idea of the
password being written to some place on the PC hard drive. (That's how
$_SESSION works, right?). Any suggestions on how to deal with this.
