Well, with a persistent session you can just store the connection in the 
HttpSession object.  I do that all the time for my AS400 object, which 
allows me to make stateful calls to programs across multiple pages.  
It's not serialization; it's an object that is preserved between pages.

Can you create a stateful session in PHP and just store the connection 
that way?  Stateful is really nice for lots of things.
