I agree that "using a connection is common for toolkits".

I can't answer for Kelly, but given his reference to an article titled
"Native JavaScript applications on IBM i with Node.js", he may assumed that
node.js was running in the "native" virtual machine environment and could
simply "call" ILE programs directly, rather than "using a connection".

One could debate the merits of "using a connection" vs. "direct call". The
latter appeals more to me.
