So how does Node run, from an IBMi perspective? Is it like Tomcat, where
you run a QSH command in batch? Does Node always run the same way?

Node could be thought of as being similar to Tomcat in that Tomcat also has

Well I already have an Apache instance listening on port 80. I've heard
the term "reverse proxy", but I have to research it because I don't know
what it means.
