The big advantages in V4R2 for IP are:
DNS support
DHCP support
Dial up PPP suport.

As far as Telnet to the AS400. It is pretty simple to configure. I assume
you have either an ethernet or token ring card in your box and configured
an ethernet line.
Use the CFGTCP command to get to the configuration menu. At least you need
to enter an interface (option 1) See Below:

                            Display TCP/IP Interface

                                                             System:
VAN400
 Internet address . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . : 128.1.1.230

 Subnet mask . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . : 255.255.255.0

 Line description . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . : ETHLINE

 Line type . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . : *ELAN

 Interface status . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . : Active

 Type of service . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . : *NORMAL

 Maximum transmission unit . . . . . . . . . . : *LIND

 Automatic start . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . : *YES

 Press Enter to continue.

 F3=Exit   F12=Cancel

and option 12.

Change Local Domain and Host Names

                                                             System:
VAN400
 Type choices, press Enter.

   Local domain name . . . ediconsulting.com

   Local host name . . . . VAN400

Bottom
 F3=Exit   F12=Cancel

You may also need to identify youself and anyother host you wish to
communicate with in the host table option 10.

To start TCP/IP use the STRTCP command. It should start all the various
TCP/IP servers. You may wish to add that command to your system start up.

On the client side, you can telnet with any telnet client, however, it will
probably negotiate VT100 terminal emulation and the keyboard with map
funny. Use a TN5250 (telnet 5250) client for best results. CA/400 comes
with one, others include, RUMBA, PCOM, Reflections, Rally! and a piece of
shareware called Mochasoft that you can d/l on the www at www.mochasoft.dk.

Good luck.
