Well, if it wasn't for the Linux box I might suggest that you see if you have a PC hooked up with twinax and you can use Client Access to transfer the files. I've used modem eliminators in the past. I have a pair of non powered short haul modems that I thought of getting bronzed because of such fond memories. If you go this route, put these on the end of the 400 comm cable and not directly into the card on the 400. There is some crossover in the IBM cable. I once configured the 400 to use IBM's STRITF to access bulletin boards and configure modems. Memories: When I started here we had 11 S/36's and not one talked to another. That pair of short haul modems got the whole thing started. Now we have T1's, towers, frame relay, etc and innumerable routers. Crawled before we walked. Sorry to hear that a hardware upgrade is out of the question for you. I take it then the goal is to migrate your data off the 400? Rob Berendt ================== Remember the Cole! My AS/400 does not have ethernet or a modem. I need to get files onto it, though. It's too much trouble to get tapes every time. My thought was to use a serial cable to set up a SLIP connection to a PC. I haven't figured out how to do this, although I suspect it is possible. I'm on V3R2 and cannot upgrade hardware or software. I can use a straight through cable or null-modem cable (I have both and will use whatever works.) I've considered a modem eliminator, but I expect they are cost prohibitive. Anyone ever try this? (I plan to connect to a Linux box to get the AS/400 on the LAN.)
