You can do SLIP on V3R2 ..... Here is the How to Do It:

You can use the existing comm cables as I recall, but that
will depend on the modem you are using.... IBM even gives
you a list of the modems that will work...

This entire procedure was spelled out in Midrange Computing a 
few years back but the IBM version does a pretty good job of
describing how to do it....

Software is another problem and file transfers will be problematic...

You are gonna need some appropriate emulation software and I can't
find that article right now....
