  This thread has strayed far from the original post.

1)  I think that we can all agree that under a varied multi-user load, you 
cannot compare a PC to an AS/400.

2)  A simple test case / benchmark was run, *eliminating* most of the 
external items that you (correctly) mention as being a significant part of 
the performance equation:  Disk, multi-processor, multi-user, display I/O, 
network speed, etc.  This test (text manipulation in a loop) should be a 
pretty fair CPU / cache speed test.

3)  The results of that test s/b somewhat telling between models.

  That is why the claims are being made that the CPU has been "geared 
down."  What other explanation can you give?
