We will expect a rather quick turnaround - 4 hours is unacceptable. We
probably will not check for whether or not we just got the email we sent,
or a different email - although I suppose we could bury a number in the
subject or text.

However, if you send a test e-mail, how will you judge 'success' and
'failure'?

A friend sent me an e-mail a couple weeks ago. In transit, it sat on a
mindspring.com server for four hours. This intermediate system was between
him and me, not necessarily directly part of the systems serving his or my
account. Would you call that success or failure? E-mail from other domains
was coming through fine at the same time; and if he'd sent a second e-mail
10 minutes later, there's a reasonable chance it could've beat the first
one to my inbox by 3 hrs 50 mins.
