Dennis,  I went ahead and tried your example (below).  I got it to work
just changing a couple of  things.

First got rid of "more" and the double quotes.  Also re-made the symbolic
link from the gawk program to awk.

This on V5R1 and QSH

Each has its limitations; each has its advantages.  Try:
   ls "$(awk '/files:/ {print $3}' | sed 's/a/z/g')*" | more
on your iSeries system.

iSeries won't like it, but that's because it's different.
